How long does the process take?

6 to 12 months between commitment and target validation, depending on perimeter complexity.

1.5°C vs well-below-2°C?

1.5°C implies very rapid decarbonisation, with steep reductions this decade and a deep transformation of the business model. Well-below-2°C is less ambitious but offers more flexibility and a generally more gradual transition in the short term.

Is scope 3 mandatory?

Yes, if your scope 3 exceeds 40% of your footprint. For most companies, it does.

Does SBTi validation cost money?

Yes, the SBTi Secretariat charges a dossier fee based on company size.

Do targets need re-validation?

Yes, every 5 years. Publishing your annual results is required to maintain your SBTi status.
