It is often the first question a business leader asks before getting started, and it is also the one the market answers worst: many providers offer nothing more than a vague "it depends" that helps no one. The price of a carbon assessment depends mainly on the size of the organization, the scope covered and the level of support. As a guide, here are the orders of magnitude seen on the French market.
- Micro-businesses and small SMEs: roughly €2,000 to €10,000, for a simple, single-site scope.
- SMEs (10 to 250 employees): most often between €5,000 and €15,000 for standard support, and up to €8,000 to €25,000 through an external consultancy when the scope is broad or multi-site.
- Mid-market companies and multi-site organizations: from €10,000 to €50,000, or more depending on complexity.
- Self-service platforms (SaaS): €3,000 to €30,000 per year depending on size, a different model from the consultancy approach.
These ranges are consistent with the data published by industry players. Worth noting: several providers publish no prices at all. We have made the opposite choice.
SaaS Software or Consultancy: What the Price Covers
A platform subscription and a consultancy engagement do not cover the same thing. SaaS charges for access to a calculation tool, and it is up to you to collect and enter the data. A consultancy charges for expert services: scoping, guided data collection, processing with the ADEME/ABC method, analysis, an action plan and a final presentation of results. The first optimizes cost, the second reliability and the ability to act on the results. At Releaf, we combine both logics: the rigor of a consulting firm and the clarity of a tool.
The 6 Factors That Make the Price Vary
Two companies of the same size can pay anywhere from single to triple the price. Here is why.
- The scope, especially scope 3. Scope 1 (direct emissions) and scope 2 (energy) are quick to calculate. Scope 3 (purchasing, transport, product use, business travel) often represents 70 to 90% of the total and requires far more data collection: it is the leading price factor.
- The number of sites and employees. The more sites, entities and data sources there are, the more time collection and consolidation take.
- The quality and availability of data. Well-kept accounting and operational data save valuable time. Scattered data lengthen the engagement.
- The level of support. Self-service, semi-guided or turnkey: the price follows the amount of expert time involved.
- The industry. An industrial, logistics or food-processing activity is more complex to model than a service activity.
- What is included. A quantified action plan, a collaborative workshop and a polished presentation of results add value, and are reflected in the quote.
How to Read a Carbon Assessment Quote
A serious quote is built on expert person-days, not an opaque flat fee. It specifies the method used (for Releaf, the Bilan Carbone® method from ADEME and the Association Bilan Carbone, in BEGES format, never the GHG Protocol alone), the scope covered (which scopes, which sites), the deliverables (the assessment, the action plan, the presentation of results) and the number of iterations. Always ask what is included beyond the calculation: an assessment without a transition plan is a snapshot with no roadmap.
Grants to Fund Your Carbon Assessment
Good news: a carbon assessment can be partly funded by public schemes, which significantly reduces the amount you pay out of pocket.
- The Diag Décarbon'Action (a French public grant from Bpifrance and ADEME). This is the benchmark scheme. It funds a 12-day engagement spread over 6 to 8 months: a total cost of €10,000 excl. VAT, a 40% grant (that is, €4,000), leaving €6,000 excl. VAT to pay. It is aimed at companies with fewer than 500 employees, created more than a year ago, that have not carried out a regulatory assessment in the past five years.
- The Booster Rev3, in Hauts-de-France. Backed by the regional authority, it covers 50% of the cost of the engagement (carbon assessment as well as LCA), up to a grant ceiling of €10,000, for regional SMEs. It can be combined, on separate engagements, with the Diag Décarbon'Action.
