Green IT has taken hold as a way to reduce the environmental footprint of information and communication technology. One of its most concrete applications is sustainable web design: building and running websites responsibly so as to limit their impact on the planet.
What sustainable web design means
Sustainable web design takes the entire life cycle of a website into account, from the initial build through hosting and everyday use to the moment the site is retired. It draws on principles and methods that make a site less demanding on the environment while keeping browsing fast and pleasant for the people using it.
Why it matters
The joint ADEME and Arcep assessment of the environmental impact of digital technology in France put the sector at 17.2 million tonnes of CO2e, or 2.5% of French emissions in 2020. The update ADEME published in early 2025 raises digital technology to 4.4% of the national carbon footprint, the difference coming from a wider scope that includes the imported impacts of manufacturing equipment. Websites account for a real share of this, mainly through the data centres that host them and the devices used to reach them. That is why sustainable practices in the design, hosting and use of a website are worth taking seriously.
Best practices for a low-impact site
A sustainable web project follows a handful of principles at each stage of a site's life cycle.

Assess needs and set objectives : before building a new site or redesigning an existing one, define precisely what it is for (informing, selling, communicating) and which features are genuinely required to get there. A site that is well thought out from the start avoids unnecessary development work and resource-heavy updates later on.

Design responsibly : a clean design, with care given to typography, colour and images, reduces page weight and bandwidth use. It also makes the site more accessible and easier to navigate for everyone.

Optimise performance : a fast site limits user frustration and energy consumption alike. Minify CSS, JavaScript and HTML files, compress images properly, cache static assets, and use lazy loading for media content.

Follow web standards : a well-designed site respects W3C recommendations on HTML, CSS and related standards, along with established practice on accessibility, search visibility and compatibility across browsers and devices.

Choose responsible hosting : the host you pick shapes the energy impact of your site. Look for providers that run on renewable energy, apply recycling and waste management policies, and use efficient cooling technology that consumes little power.
